Walk 1 Ashwell Grange – Park Hill – High Woolaston

Approximately 3.6 miles (5.8 kilometres) of which about 1 ¼ miles is metalled surface. Ascent 500ft. 2 ¼ hours.
Starts on the A48 at OS grid ref ST579 985 (51°41’03”N  2°36’33”W). Convenient parking in the lay-by on the A48 near Ashwell Lodge (not in the bus stop lay-by).

Walk past Ashwelll Lodge along footpath FWO/69/1. Go over the cattle grid at the bottom of the valley and strike out to the left diagonally across the field to its far left corner following FWO/71/1.

Don’t cross the stile but turn right along the “road” FWO/70/3.  Once past the houses turn left through the yard along FWO/81/2.  Follow the track across the field and through the gap in the fence, bear left onto FWO/82/1 until the field boundary is reached.

Turn right onto FWO78/1 and follow it to the field gate.  Cross the stile and follow the track up the hill around to the left until the forestry track FWO/88/1 is reached, turn right onto it.

Go up the hill on the track, which becomes FTM/108/1, to Park Hill Road.

Turn right down Park Hill Road for approximately 800yds and turn right onto FWO/88/2.  This footpath descends steeply through rough vegetation and is slippery in the winter and in wet weather.  At the bottom of the hill pick up path FWO/79/1 turn left and follow it.  Then bear left onto and follow  the unnumbered track, then turn right across the stile on to FWO/75/1 which having become FWO/75/3 then terminates in the yard of High Woolaston Farm where it meets FWO/74/2.

Turn right onto this; pass over the stiles at the edge of the yard and at the bottom of the valley cross Piccadilly Brook onto FWO70/1 which is followed across the bridge at the next stream and on to its junction with the other paths at Ashwell Grange. Turn left onto the road that is FWO/72/1 and follow; crossing back over the cattle grid to FWO/69/1 thence back to the lay-by.
